One of our most beautiful alpine valleys, Zgornjesavska valley rests in the north-western part of Slovenia, in the corner that borders both Austria and Italy . This narrow valley situated between the Julian Alps and the Karavanke mountains has a superb scenic setting and is known for its kind and hospitable people. Mysterious and majestic, embraced by the magnificent mountain peaks the valley gave rise to numerous legends and traditions. And amongst this beautiful nature, 810 meters above sea level lies the charming alpine village of Kranjska Gora.
Kranjska Gora, a traditional alpine village, has a old town full of character whilst the hotels are built into the newer part of the village in keeping with the landscape. In the winter its hosts the world alpine skiing tournament for the Vitranc Cup as well as the nearby Planica ski jumping. In the summer it is an inviting destination for enthusiastic walkers and mountaineers. Ideal for a walking holiday or for families that like to spend their holiday's outdoors.

What to see and do when in Kranjska Gora
Kranjska Gora is a walking paradise , offering a broad spectrum of walks from waterfalls to high-level ridge walks all with unbeatable views of the outstanding Julian Alps. Kranjska Gora and its surroundings have many points of interest to visit during your stay, these include:
Liznjek House / Homestead
located in the heart of Kranjska Gora is a genuine "Slovene Alpine House" which was erected several centuries ago and bears witness to the folk architecture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Liznjek's house was, for its time, one of the most advanced examples of rural architecture in the area - a prototype that remains virtually unchanged to this day. It is nowadays a museum exhibiting characteristic of the period when the house was in its prime.
Zelenci Lakes
A water and nature reserve a short walking distance from Kranjska Gora. A walk through the reserve you will find many known species of flora including ones that are only present in this area of Europe. The reserve is also the source of the Sava river, an underground spring, which flows until the black sea.
Jasna Lake
Located at the start of the Vršič pass is a small jewel of a lake and ideal as a starting point for a number of walks and hikes within the Julian Alps. Swimming in the warmer summer months is also possible. The crystal clear waters of the lake and amazing scenery are ideal for an afternoon picnic.
Tamar Valley
The walk through the Tamar Valley in the shadow of Mt Mojstrovka and (2366m) and Jalovec (2645m) is simply breath taking. At the start of the valley are the Planica ski jumps, you can climb half way and get an impression of the magnitude of the jumps. Once you've reached the end of the valley, there is a small mountain hut – Dom v Tamarju at 1108m.
Dovje & Mojstrana Villages
The last town before entering the Triglav National Park is an ideal starting point for conquering the heighest peak in the Julian Alps ad Slovenia. Mt Triglav. Mountain guides will take you safely from Mojstrana along mountain paths to the summit of 2864m, a 2 day trip staying overnight in a mountain hostel.

Villages of Zgornjesavska Valley

Gozd Martuljek
– lies 4 km east from Kranjska Gora and offers a magnificent view on the Martuljek mountain range. There is a hotel and a camping in the village which offer many sports (volley beach ball, basketball, artificial climbing wall) and a childrens playground. There is shop, restaurant, bar and a post office. Transport to Kranjska Gora is possible by a regular bus, Spik hotel shuttle or taxi. A walking path is on the cycling track or through the forest by the river Sava and it takes about an hour.
Podkoren
– lies just 2 km from the border with Austria only 3 km distance from Kranjska Gora. With its views over the nature reserve of Zelenci with Sir Humprey Davy describing it as the most beautiful village he has ever seen. It is the smallest village in the Kranjska Gora region but proud to organise a world cup in Alpine skiing every year. There is a traditional styled restaurant with a ‘black kitchen’ just a step away from the square .The closest post office and shops are in Kranjska Gora. Transport to Kranjska Gora is possible by regular bus or taxi. A walking path is on the cycling track or through the forest by the river Sava and it takes about half an hour.
Rateče
– lies on the border with Italy and 7 km from Kranjska Gor. It is a peaceful village at the foot of Planica where the ski jumping world cup is held every year in March. It offers only 2* accommodation and it is suitable for people who want to make a holiday with a traditional way of living on the Slovenian countryside. There is a market, post office and a tourist information centre in the village. Transport to Kranjska Gora is possible by regular bus or taxi. A walking path is on the cycling track and it takes about an hour to reach Kranjska Gora and only 10 minutes to reach the border with Italy
Dovje-Mojstrana
– are two villages 15 km distance from Kranjska Gora just under Slovenia's highest mountain Triglav. Dovje is the second sunniest village (has a very high number of sunny days) in Slovenia and still offers an insight into Slovenia’s alpine countryside. Mojstrana is known for its starting points to Triglav through the valleys of Vrata, Kot or Krma. There is a beautiful park in the village and a museum of alpinism. Both villages offer restaurants, two pizzerias, a post office and shops -one of them with home made craft only. Transport to Kranjska Gora is possible by regular bus or taxi. There is also the cycling track to Kranjska Gora or Bled through the Radovna valley, making it ideal for those that like outdoor activities.
